Are smartphones bad for you?
I posted this answer on Quora and thought it'd be worthwhile re-posting here. I've found my smartphone usage to be an ongoing cause for concern. I'm constantly tweaking notification settings, and even downgraded to a dumb phone at one stage all in an effort to ensure the phone doesn't become all consuming.
Yeah, they can be. It’s very easy to get hooked on checking them all the time. They have their uses - as a map, music player as well as a phone, but I do find because they do so much, and they’re so easily accessible, it’s insanely easy to fall into the trap of just using them for anything and everything to fill up every single moment of downtime such that you end up with no downtime.
If you’re interested in why it’s important to have some downtime built into your day, search up the Default Mode Network..
Then take a look at this book: Autopilot: The Art and Science of Doing Nothing by Andrew Smart, I read it and highly recommend it.
